Giving with Confidence: A Purpose Driven Approach to Philanthropy

Many people want their charitable giving to feel meaningful but it’s common to hesitate, especially when you’re not sure what’s impactful, what’s “tax- smart,” or where to even begin. A simple, purpose-first approach can help you clarify what matters most and shape a giving plan that reflects your values and also your IMSA story.

Charitable giving often gets framed as a tax-time decision or incentive: How can I maximize my tax deduction? Is there a tax benefit involved with this donation? Are there tax deadlines I need to worry about?

While it’s important to be mindful of gift tax laws and benefits, the most sustainable and most meaningful gifts usually start by discussing their purpose before anything else.

When thinking about making a significant gift, it’s easy to think about the mechanics and logistics first – gifting methods, timing of gifts, source of funds, tax considerations- but giving actually feels most fulfilling when we approach it in a different way. First, start with a purpose: What values do I want my giving to reflect? What kind of impact do I want my gift to have?

For our donors, reflecting on these types of questions often leads back to education, access, curiosity, and new opportunities that connect our donors to IMSA’s mission. If you’re on the fence about donating to the IMSA Fund, perhaps start by thinking about these 3 questions.

  1. What are you most grateful for in your own educational journey? Maybe you had a teacher who believed in you. Perhaps IMSA’s residential experience helped shape who you are today. Maybe it was a program that challenged you to think differently
  2. Who do you want to help at IMSA? Your answer might include students in financial need, college-bound students, future engineers or mathematicians, or young people in general who need a place to belong.
  3. What kind of impact do you want your gift to have? Some donors want to see immediate results so they can support things such as annual student programs and athletics. Others are drawn to long-term impact such as scholarships, endowed funds, or legacy gifts that support students for generations. Many donors dabble in both!

Everyone’s situation is unique. If you’re considering different ways to support IMSA, whether through annual giving, a multi-year pledge, or a future gift, it’s always wise to consult your financial or tax professional.
