Personal Reflections

October 2, 2014

Dear IMSA Family,

I want to begin by thanking all of you again for welcoming me into the IMSA family.  This week marks my third official week as president of this fine institution, and I’m beginning to feel more at home.  I’m very happy to report that I don’t get nearly as lost as I did those first few days on campus.

Over the past few weeks, I’ve met with faculty at large meetings, in small groups, and individually.  I had my first office hours for faculty, too!

I have also met with groups of students including URP (Underrepresented Population), Student Council, and with seniors during a “Conversation with the President” session.  I stopped by the Powder Puff game and Homecoming soccer game.

I have visited a number of classrooms to observe students and teachers in our most important work here — teaching and learning.  I’ve been impressed with the depth of teacher knowledge and expertise as well as our students’ focus and engagement in classrooms.

Finally, I have continued to meet with key leaders and groups, including members of our Board of Trustees, Fund Board, several legislators, our security team and some support staff, including our amazing receptionist, Rosemary Forni.

Throughout all of these conversations, I’ve learned of everyone’s deep desire to see IMSA thrive as well as their commitment to build on our successes.  I’ve learned about their pride in IMSA’s past accomplishments and their wish for us to continue to “advance the human condition.”

At every opportunity, I have asked, “What advice would you give me about how to strengthen IMSA?”  If you haven’t already shared your ideas with me, I welcome your input.  Please feel free to send it to me via email.

Sincerely,

José M. Torres, Ph.D.
