IMSA STEM Club

Descriptions of our fall STEM Club programs are below. Schedule and registration links are below each program description. Participants are responsible for gathering the program materials – a materials list is after each description.

Please note there will be no STEM Club classes the week of November 23.

STEM Buffet (Grade 4)

Do you love all things science? Are you an inventor, developing and building your own creations? Maybe you are an engineer, tinkering with and improving your projects. Or maybe you just want to learn more about science, technology, engineering and math! Experience a buffet of STEM activities and find your passion. Explore the chemistry of extra special bubbles, use the magic of magnets to create slime that moves on its own, and make an arcade game you can play with others. Materials list.

Math Mates (Grades 5-6)

We will be exploring the world of fractions and probability through games and hands-on activities. While addressing advanced standards, we’ll also be practicing key 4th and 5th grade level topics to address any learning loss from the end of this previous school year. The program will culminate in a student-developed game that demonstrates their knowledge of probability and the comprehension of fractions. Get ready for math AND fun! Materials List.

Engineering Explorations  (Grades 5-6)

Participants will engage in hands-on activities as they explore the engineering design process. Students will design and build boats and test them through a series of virtual challenges, create models of heart valves and lungs, and test the principles of force and motion by building a Rube Goldberg contraption. Materials list.

CSImsa  (Grades 5-6)

Calling all forensic investigators! Learn how to gather evidence and unravel the science and mathematics behind crime scene clues like fingerprints and footprints, DNA, handwriting, and more! At the end of the program, students will be tasked with analyzing evidence to find the guilty suspect. Materials list.

Space Weather Lab (Grades 5-6)

Students will explore the space and weather phenomena that have fascinated humans for centuries, and take on a series of space/weather-related challenges including designing a (tissue paper) hot air balloon with the longest possible flight time, creating a hovercraft that can overcome various obstacles, and making a “floating-in-space” neutral buoyancy bottle where objects appear to be “magically suspended” in space… Materials list.

Gold Medal STEM (Grades 7-8)

Explore how STEM concepts are at play in sports!  How is sports equipment made to accommodate maximal forces? These and other physics principles will be explored as participants build and customize their own bows and arrows, catapults, bike helmets, and vault landing mats. Materials list.

Engineering – Submarine Challenge (Grades 7-8)

Ocean Engineers design and build structures, equipment, and instruments which advance our understanding of marine science. In this program, participants become ocean engineers who get to design and build their own model of a submarine that will be used to solve an underwater crisis. Participants will learn to operate their submarines and discover how natural laws like Archimedes’ Principle and natural forces like gravity, the buoyant force, and water pressure can be applied throughout their project. Materials list.

Vital Signs –  (Grades 7-8)

In this program, budding medical students will gain a general understanding of human anatomy through hands-on explorations of the heart, blood, skin and bones. Participants will practice suturing, explore the physics of blood flow, and much more. They will also take on a bioengineering project that will allow them to apply engineering principles and practices to the human body. Materials list.
