Dr. Kennette Benedict, Executive Director & Publisher, Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists
"Minutes to Midnight"
We are on the brink of a second nuclear age more perilous than the one that began in 1945 with the dropping of the atomic bomb on Hiroshima. We also face grave threats to our societies from the effects of climate change. Taking into account the magnitude of these dangers to humanity, the Doomsday Clock of the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists is now set at 5 minutes to midnight, the metaphoric end of civilization. What can we do to turn back the Clock?
Kennette Benedict received her A.B. from Oberlin College and a Ph.D. in political science from Stanford University. Before her position as executive director and publisher for the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists, she was director of the International Peace and Security Area at the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation. Before joining the foundation in 1987, Dr. Benedict taught at Rutgers University and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Her past research and teaching focused on organizational decision making, jury decision making, and on women’s leadership and American politics. She has published articles on global governance and on violent conflict. Dr. Benedict is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations, the Chicago Council on Global Affairs, and the International Institute of Strategic Studies.
