Combinatorial games played by two individuals reduce the position of a game to another position that is simpler in some sense. One such game, Nim: Complicated strategy or Mathematics can be played (and won) without knowledge of the underlying mathematics. But if players understand how to write numbers in the binary system they have an advantage that can lead to victory.
