Lesson Summary
In the lesson, We'll Never Tire of this Investigation, students are likewise challenged to think about the information contained in the image of the tire impression. Through careful observations and resources provided by the teacher, they can determine the width and circumference of the tire that made the impression, as well as its brand and make. They will learn how to read a tire's alphanumeric code, and learn how to calculate a tire's circumference based on this code. These experiences will help them as they attempt to link each print to a specific person.

Lesson Objectives
The students will:

  • use physical characteristics of an image for identification purposes;
  • decide how to measure an object that doesn't have clearly-defined boundaries;
  • use that measurement in a multi-stage math calculation to determine the size of the tire that made the track found as evidence; and,
  • decide what further information they need to acquire in order to link the evidence to a specific person(s); they will discuss the specific assumptions underlying such decisions.
