Learning Summary
Students' prior work with fingerprint classifications, the mathematically exploration of fingerprint uniqueness, the distribution of fingerprint types within their class, as compared to data from a large sample of the general population and the fine-level details found in all fingerprint patterns forms the basis for this lesson. They apply this knowledge in the activity Fingerprint Evidence Analysis using the crime scene evidence, and attempt to match these prints with their leading suspects.

Learning Objectives
The students will:

  • use careful laboratory practice in handling the crime scene evidence and the fingerprint cards from the two leading suspects; and,
  • apply their knowledge about fingerprint patterns to attempt to make a link between each piece of evidence and a specific suspect
