IMSA NAMES 50 NATIONAL MERIT® SEMIFINALISTS

AURORA—The Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy® (IMSA) recently recognized its 50 semifinalists in the 2009 National Merit® Scholarship Program.
The semifinalists represent 37 communities throughout Illinois. Local-area recipients include: (see attached list).

More than 1.5 million seniors in nearly 21,000 U.S. high schools entered the year 2009 competition by taking the qualifying exam in 2007 (their junior year). National semifinalists include less than one percent of each state’s seniors.

Semifinalists from throughout the nation will now try to advance to the finalist level of the competition. Approximately 8,200 finalists eventually will receive merit scholarships for college undergraduate study. Merit scholars will be announced in the spring of 2009.

IMSA President Dr. Max McGee noted that all schools throughout Illinois can be proud
of the students' achievements.  "We congratulate these students for their outstanding performance and thank those who helped prepare them for bright futures including their families, home schools from every corner in the state of Illinois and IMSA faculty and staff,” McGee said.   “These students are well on their way to becoming tomorrow’s future leaders who will use their skills and talents to help improve people’s lives.”

The internationally recognized Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy® (IMSA) develops creative, ethical leaders in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.  As a teaching and learning laboratory created by the State of Illinois, IMSA enrolls academically talented Illinois students (grades 10-12) in its advanced, residential college preparatory program, and it serves thousands of educators and students in Illinois and beyond through innovative instructional programs that foster imagination and inquiry.
