AURORA – Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy (IMSA) mathematics teacher and Naperville resident Dr. Steven Condie recently received the Edyth May Sliffe Award for Distinguished High School Mathematics Teaching, sponsored by the Mathematical Association of America (MAA) and the American Mathematics Competitions (AMC). He is one of only 22 high school teachers in the U.S. and Canada to receive the award.
The Edyth May Sliffe Award is designed to recognize and reward outstanding teachers for their efforts in the development of mathematical talents of high school students. Nominations for the award were made by students from the 60 highest scoring American Mathematics Contest 12 (AMC 12) teams in the U.S., Canada and U.S. schools abroad.
This is the second time Dr. Condie received the honor in the 18-year history of the award and is the seventh year an IMSA math teacher has been recognized. Past IMSA recipients were Titu Andreescu (1994), Ronald Vavrinek (1995), Dr. Micah Fogel (2001), Dr. Steven Condie (2002), Dr. Michael Keyton (2003) and Dr. Don Porzio (2005).
"It is most rewarding to be recognized by your students as someone who contributed to their success in learning mathematics," Condie said. "It is both a pleasure and a great privilege to work with the wonderful students at IMSA."
Dr. Condie began teaching at IMSA in 1997. In addition to coaching students in state and national competitions, he teaches a wide variety of mathematics courses at IMSA including Mathematical Investigations, Calculus and Theory of Analysis.
Condie, a National Board Certified Teacher, currently serves on the Board of the Illinois Council of Teachers of Mathematics and is the Mid West Site Coordinator for the American Regions Math League. In addition, he participates in other state and local professional activities.
The internationally recognized Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy® (IMSA) develops creative, ethical leaders in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.
