IMSA Math Teacher Receives Life Achievement Award

AURORA - Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy (IMSA) mathematics teacher and Oswego resident Ron Vavrinek will be honored by the Illinois Council of Teachers of Mathematics (ICTM) with its Distinguished Life Achievement in Mathematics Award.  He will receive the award at the ICTM Conference in Peoria, IL. on October 18, 2002.This award is presented each year to one mathematics educator who has demonstrated distinguished and honorable service to mathematics education for an entire career. Vavrinek is the second IMSA mathematics teacher to receive this award.  Charles Hamburg of Libertyville was honored in 1999.

Vavrinek is in his 16th year at IMSA.  In addition to coaching students in state and national competitions, he teaches a variety of advanced level mathematics courses at IMSA including Mathematical Investigations and Advanced Placement Computer Science. He also advises students in a national mathematics honor society as well as participating in many other state and local professional activities.

Located in Aurora, IMSA is a learning enterprise that builds the capacity of students, teachers and policymakers to improve and transform mathematics and science teaching and learning.  IMSA's residential educational program serves Illinois students (grades 10 - 12) talented in mathematics and science; its professional development Center serves schools, educational systems, teachers and students in Illinois and beyond.
