AURORA - Ceramics students from the Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy® (IMSA) are teaming up with 22 professional potters from the Chicago area on Saturday, April 15, to throw 500 ceramic "millennium" mugs to benefit the Potters for Peace Foundation.

The mugs will be sold for $10 each and will be ready for pick-up by May 15. The proceeds will be used to make ceramic water filters for the filtering of safe drinking water for residents rebuilding from Hurricane Mitch in Nicaragua and Honduras.

"Many of the pottery co-ops in Nicaragua were washed away by Hurricane Mitch," said IMSA Fine Arts teacher Clay Sewell. "The storm left people in the rural communities without potable water. To raise $5000 for Potters for Peace would be terrific." To reserve a mug, contact Clay Sewell at 630-907-5054 or email clay@imsa.edu

Potters for Peace is a non-for-profit organization that works in under developed countries to help preserve and promote distinctive 1,500 year-old ceramic craft traditions. The burnished pottery of many American countries is in danger of extinction.
