IMSA Students Qualify to Take USA Math Olympiad

AURORA — Five students from the Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy® (IMSA) are among the 200 nationally who have qualified to take the USA Mathematical Olympiad (USAMO). IMSA had the second highest number of qualifying students in the nation.

IMSA qualifiers are Brian Fitting of North Aurora, Yun Ji of Hoffman Estates, Zhihao Liu of Lisle, Nicholas Rupprecht of Gurnee and Denny Tu of Naperville.

Students qualify to take the USAMO based on their previous scores on the American High School Math Exam and the American Invitational Math Exam. High scorers on the USAMO, to be held May 2, will be invited to train for the USA International Mathematical Olympiad team at the University of Nebraska at Lincoln, June 6 - July 4, 2000.

1994 IMSA graduate Stephen Wang was one of only six students to make the USA Mathematical Olympiad team which took first place and received a perfect team score in international competition in 1994. This year, the U.S. team will compete internationally in Seoul, Korea July 13-25, 2000.
