IMSA Great Minds Program® Dialogue To Focus on Redesign of National Science Curriculum

AURORA-- The Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy® (IMSA) is hosting a dialogue for high school science teachers and administrators entitled Physics First? Redesigning the Science Curriculum for High Schools. The dialogue is sponsored by the IMSA Great Minds Program®.
On April 8 from 10:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m. in the IMSA auditorium, a panel of national science and education curriculum experts will discuss the state of science teaching and learning in the United States, including ideas for redesigning the science curriculum.

- Dr. Gerald F. Wheeler- Dr. Wheeler is Executive Director of the National Science Teachers Association (NSTA). Prior to this role, he was Professor of Physics at Montana State University and Program Director for the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) in the area of Public Understanding of Science and Technology.
- Dr. Leon Lederman- Dr. Lederman, an internationally renowned high-energy physicist and IMSA’s Inaugural Resident Scholar, is Director Emeritus of Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory (Fermilab) in Batavia. He won the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1988 for his work on neutrinos. He is also a co-founder of Project ARISE (American Renaissance in Science Education).
- Dr. Hazel Loucks- Dr. Loucks is the Illinois Deputy Governor of Education. Prior to this position, Dr. Loucks was the Higher Education Director of the Illinois Education Association/NEA with areas of specialization including creating a framework for a seamless web of education (pre-K to adult).
- Dr. Donald Nelson- Dr. Nelson is President of the Illinois Science Teachers Association (ISTA) and is the Assistant Dean for Teacher Education in the College of Education and Human Services at Western Illinois University.
- Dr. Robert Yager- Dr. Yager is a Professor at the University of Iowa and Past-President of the National Science Teachers Association (NSTA). Dr. Yager is very active in improving K-12 science teaching and has won many national and international awards for science education.
- Ms. Marge Bardeen- Ms. Bardeen is the Education Office Manager for Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory (Fermilab) in Batavia and the Project Director of the Fermilab ARISE Project. Ms. Bardeen also is the President of Friends of Fermilab.
