Objectives

  • Students should understand and critically think about leadership models, theories, and concepts.
  • Students should have an increased awareness of personal values and what is important to "self."
  • Students should have a basic understanding of group dynamics and social justice as related to leadership.
  • Students should have enhanced critical thinking abilities and oral/written communication abilities.
  • Students should apply related leadership skills in the creation of an organization and the development of its vision, mission, funding, values, service/product, goals, and culture.
  • Students should begin to apply concepts of leadership, specifically the Relational Leadership Model in their own personal lives.

Policies

Students must:

  • Follow all rules and procedures established in the IMSA handbook.
  • Respect the guidelines laid out by the facilitators.
  • Follow attendance policy  
    • Unexcused absence: 3 points
    • Tardy: 1 point
    • An accumulation of more than 4 points will result in a failing grade
    • Students must contact Monica Kao or Rachel Banke if they will be absent for a week. Illness, away sports games, academic programs (not clubs), and other situations deemed appropriate by the coordinators are considered excused absences.
  • Be active participants and pull their own weight.
  • Be open to learning; get out of their comfort zones.
  • Maintain a safe zone (respect and tolerate everyone and their ideas; listen; what is said should remain confidential; do not make assumptions, judge, or prejudge people; share at their own level
  • Be supportive and encouraging of others
  • Communicate with the facilitators and coordinators
  • Silence or turn off all electronic devices during class. Students should not subject anyone to disruptive or rude behavior.
