Student Inquiry and Research Program Details
Assessment
While the investigation is underway, various aspects of the project are evaluated. Check under Forms for assessment forms that identify particular evaluation criteria. Upon completion of the investigation, a final assessment of the student's work is made. This assessment determines the final grade on the student's transcript and academic credit for the investigation.
Final assessment is based on both the quality of the work done during the investigation and the extent to which the student completed all investigation and administrative requirements. To help ensure a successful final assessment, the student should ensure that all items on the summary list of investigation requirements are completed with quality and submitted when they are due.
After the student's reflection with the advisor is finished, the advisor provides input on the student's work based on the extent to which the investigation goals were met to the SIR Coordinator. The advisor documents this input as the final step in completing the Advisor Summary and Evaluation of Investigation form. Any deficiencies or lack of quality in conducting the investigation or meeting investigation goals must be identified by the advisor, and thought given by the advisor as to how the deficiencies will affect the student's grade.
Transcript Notation
Determination of the final grade and academic credit for the investigation is made by the Coordinator of SIR in consultation with the student's investigation advisor. Status will be noted on the student transcript as follows:
• A transcript grade of P+ (pass with distinction) indicates that all requirements were met with distinction; one academic credit was earned.
• A transcript grade of P (pass) indicates that all requirements were met; one academic credit was earned.
• A transcript grade of W (withdraw) indicates that the student withdrew from SIR in good standing after the first quarter of the academic year; no academic credit was earned.
• A transcript grade of WF (withdraw fail) indicates that the student was withdrawn from SIR after the first academic quarter for failing to meet program requirements; no academic credit was earned.
• A transcript grade of F (fail) indicates that the student failed to meet all program requirements by the end of the academic year; no academic credit was earned.
• A temporary transcript status of In Progress, used only in rare cases, indicates that the student must stil complete some final work on the investigation within a specified timeframe before the final grade and credit will be assigned; failure to complete the final work in the specified timeframe will result in a transcript grade of F (fail) and no academic credit will be earned.
